For over ten
years my brother and I have been
running a shop in the middle of
the Jewish Quarter of the Old City
of Jerusalem. We named the store
Shorashim, which is the
Hebrew word for ‘roots.’ We chose
the name as a statement of our
very intense feelings of
thankfulness at being able to set
our roots back into the land of
our forefathers and in the city of
G-d, Jerusalem. Right at the
outset, we had decided that the
purpose of the store would not be
to only sell gifts or trinkets.
What we wanted to sell was ‘the
love of G-d, our people and our
land.’ The gifts would be an
appropriate backdrop. People began
to get the idea and within a short
while would begin to drop by to
talk, to listen, to share and
sometimes to buy.
Among the many
groups and individuals that began
to frequent the shop we began to
receive as guests an increasing
number of Christian groups. These
groups wanted to come in to
dialogue, discuss, and debate. As
well, they came in to share their
thoughts on the issue that we both
have complete agreement on: that
G-d is in the midst of fulfilling
many of the prophecies of Old
right before our eyes. As the
groups that began to come in for
discussions varied greatly in
their theological bent, so the
discussions varied greatly in
their intensity and content. But
one thing was consistent (and in
fact, in the beginning, we found
rather surprising). All the groups
were clearly in search of the
Jewish roots of their own faith.
For thousands of
years the Christian Bible has been
teaching that the Christian world
was grafted onto the Jewish root.
But for most of these thousands of
years, what that has meant was,
that the blossoming branch was
being grafted unto a withering
root. Many Christians believed
that their faith had replaced the
Jewish faith, which was itself
doomed to exile and oblivion.
Suddenly, many of these people are
beginning to realize that you
cannot have a blossoming branch if
it is grafted unto a withering
root.
They remembered
what they already knew: that G-d
does not lie, and that when He
said His covenant was forever, He
meant FOREVER! That old/new
awareness has had awesome effects.
Walls of arrogance and ignorance
that have built up over the
centuries are slowly melting away.
It is important to state that the
differences that exist between the
two faiths are real, and remain
substantive. There are issues we
could, should, and do discuss and,
by that reveal to each other new
insights on those substantive
issues. But Faith is of G-d, and
Faith is a relationship of such
intensity and worth that it can
only be resolved between the
individual and G-d.
Once these
things are truly left to G-d, then
the two peoples are freed to share
so much more. What they begin to
share is the awesome reality that
G-d is in the midst of fulfilling
everything that He promised He
would.
We stand in the
store with a group and look out
our window unto the square and
watch children playing and old
people resting on their canes in
fulfillment of Zachariah’s
prophecy. We stand in the store
and watch a bride and groom walk
down through the streets escorted
by young people singing out verses
from Isaiah that prophesied this
exact scene. We stand in the store
and watch a group of immigrants
from Russia on a guided tour and
we realize that they themselves
are fulfilling Jeremiah’s
prophecies.
The fruits we
eat in this amazing land are
Ezekiel’s prophecies revealed.
Therein lies the secret of this
Land.
And it is a secret that G-d is
revealing to more and more people
all the time.

We are

from Moshe Kempinski. Moshe is
a close friend, counselor, and
inspirational speaker who
lives in Jerusalem and
frequently addresses the
participants of our tours on
the phenomenal events of the
times in which we live. He and
his family are Orthodox Jews
who exemplify a remarkable
faith in G-d and His Word. He
and his brother, Dov, enjoy a
unique ‘window’ of vision from
their shop in the Old City,
very close to the Western
Wall. Through this ‘window’
they are able to view
different people of different
faith experiences who all come
to Jerusalem in order to see
the holiest city in the world.
We trust that you will be
moved by Moshe’s letter, and
hope that one day you will
have the wonderful opportunity
of meeting him and calling him
‘friend.’
After much anticipation and
several months of hard work, a
miniature model of the Beit
haMikdash, the Temple, has been
completed. Many contributed to the
research, but the painstaking task
of constructing the model rested
with Steve Salter of Oklahoma.
Steve spent hour upon hour working
with detailed information to
produce the most beautiful
miniature model we have ever seen.
At present, only the Temple
building is complete, but it far
exceeds our expectations. Although
Steve, his wife Karen, and son
Jason may grieve at seeing their
labor of love depart from their
care, they are eager to begin work
on the next phase of the project,
the Altar and inner courtyards.
The model will be used extensively
in teaching on the importance of
the Temple, its services, and
preparations for a life-size
model. The miniature reflects the
Temple in the first century. Its
accuracy is profound. In addition
to its obvious contribution to
local teaching and television
programming, the model will also
be used as Joseph Good visits
other congregations and groups to
speak on the Temple. If you are
interested in Joseph Good
presenting the model and giving
insight on the Temple, please call
our office to schedule an
appropriate time. In the meantime,

and his family as they continue
with this awesome responsibility.

Hatikva Ministries has three
separate bank accounts: the
general fund, the David fund, and
a special fund for donations
specifically designated for the
Temple project.
All honorariums, undesignated
donations and funds from the sale
of materials are deposited into
the Hatikva Ministries general
fund. This account is responsible
for the payment of the salaries of
Joseph Good and four other
employees. In addition, the
account is also responsible for
overhead costs such as rental of
the Hatikva Ministries offices,
utilities, printing of the
newsletters and written material,
raw materials for tape sets, and
postage. The employees of Hatikva
Ministries all receive a modest
income without benefits, with the
exception of spiritual reward. Our
staff works very diligently and is
deserving of much more than their

Blessed are You, O L-rd our G-d,
King of the universe, who has
sanctified us through Your
commandments, and has commanded us
to hear the sound of the Shofar.
Blowing the Shofar
Rabbi Saadia Gaon, the head of
the Babylonian Academy (ninth
century), stated that there are
ten reasons for the blowing of the
Shofar on Rosh HaShanah:
The first is, because
Rosh haShanah marks the beginning
of Creation which the Holy One, be
blessed, created the world and
reigned over it. Kings do the
same, who have trumpets and horns
blown to let it be known and heard
everywhere when the anniversary of
the beginning of the reign falls.
So we, on Rosh haShanah, accept
the kingship of the Creator, be
blessed. Thus said David: “With
trumpets and sound of the horn
shout ye before the King, the L-rd”
(Psalms 98.6).
The second reason is
that, since Rosh haShanah is the
first of the ten days of Teshuvah,
the shofar is blown to announce
their beginning, as though to
warn: Let all who desire to turn
in Teshuvah, turn now; and if you
do not, you will have no reason to
cry injustice. Kings do the same:
first they warn the populace in
their decree, and whoever violates
the decrees after the warning
complains unheeded.
The third reason is to
remind us of our stand at the foot
of Mount Sinai, as it is said
(Exodus 19.19): “The voice of
the shofar waxed louder and
louder,” in order that we may
take upon ourselves that which our
forefathers took upon themselves
when they said (Exodus 24.7): “We
will do and obey.”
The fourth reason is to
remind us of the words of the
prophets, which were compared to a
shofar, as it is said (Ezekiel
33.4-5): “Then whosoever
heareth the sound of the shofar,
and taketh not warning, if the
sword come, and take him away, his
blood shall be upon his own head .
. . whereas if he had taken
warning, he would have delivered
his soul.”
The fifth reason is to
remind us of the destruction of
the Temple and the battle alarms
of the foe, as it is said
(Jeremiah 4.19): “Because
thou hast heard, O my soul, the
sound of the shofar, the alarm of
war.” When we hear the sound
of the ram’s-horn, we beseech G-d
to rebuild the Temple.
The sixth reason is to
remind us of the Binding of Isaac,
who offered himself to heaven. So
ought we to be ready at all times
to offer our lives for the
sanctification of his Name. And
may our remembrance rise before
him for our benefit.
The seventh reason is
that, when we hear the blowing of
the shofar, we fear and tremble
and bend our will to the will of
the Creator — for such is the
effect of the shofar, which causes
shaking and trembling, as it is
written (Amos 3.6): “Shall
the shofar be blown in a city, and
the people not tremble?”
The eighth reason is to
remind us of the great Day of
Judgement, that we may all fear,
as it is said (Zephaniah 1.14-16):
“The great day of the L-RD is
near and hasteth greatly . . . a
day of the shofar and alarm.”
The ninth reason is to
remind us of the gathering of the
dispersed of Israel, that we may
passionately long for it, as it is
said (Isaiah 27.13): “And it
shall come to pass in that day,
that a great shofar shall be
blown; and they shall come that
were lost in the land of Assyria.”
The tenth reason is to
remind us of the revival of the
dead, that we may believe in it,
as it is said (Isaiah 18.3): “All
ye inhabitants of the world, and
ye dwellers in the earth, when an
ensign is lifted up on the
mountains, see ye; and when the
shofar is blown, hear ye.”
